Start with ownership
Ownership affects tax questions, service responsibilities, property transfers and what happens at the end of the agreement.
Compare payment mechanics
Review down payment, starting payment or energy price, interest, escalation, term, automatic-payment conditions and total obligations.
Compare protection and transfer language
Production guarantees, maintenance, battery coverage, home-sale transfers, buyouts and remedies differ by program.
Ownership is the first distinction
With a loan purchase, the homeowner generally owns the equipment and owes the lender under the loan terms. Under a lease or PPA, the provider generally owns the equipment. That distinction affects warranties, service responsibilities, transfer and any ownership-related benefits.
Payment labels can be misleading
A loan has principal, interest and a repayment schedule. A lease pays for equipment use. A PPA pays under an energy-pricing method that may be levelized monthly. Compare the actual schedule, escalators, fees and term rather than assuming every monthly solar bill works the same way.
Build the whole electricity-cost comparison
Include the solar payment and estimated remaining utility bill. Use the same roof, array, battery and household assumptions. Do not count a tax credit or rebate until its applicability is verified. Compare less optimistic production and utility-price scenarios.
Compare a future move
A home sale can require loan payoff, lender coordination, agreement transfer or another contract-specific action. Ask the relevant provider for the process, qualifications, timing and possible costs. Neither ownership nor third-party ownership guarantees that every buyer will value the system the same way.
Choose from goals rather than a universal ranking
A homeowner prioritizing equipment ownership may evaluate cash or a loan. Another may prefer specified provider service with a lease or PPA. Available offers, cash flow, expected time in the home and willingness to manage equipment all influence the decision. Read the full documents before choosing.
