COMPARE THE COMPLETE PROPOSAL

What zero down covers—and what must be confirmed

Read when the first payment begins and whether any roof or electrical work is outside the program. Ask for a written list of possible customer-paid items before treating a proposal as requiring no cash at all.

CLARITY BEFORE COMMITMENT

Compare ownership, a lease and a PPA

Make the comparison using the same system, battery configuration and production assumptions. A lower first payment can hide a different escalator, smaller battery or excluded work. Decision: Equipment owner; Cash / loan purchase: Homeowner; Lease: Third-party owner; Power purchase agreement: Third-party owner. Decision: Payment basis; Cash / loan purchase: Purchase price or loan terms; Lease: Equipment-use payment; Power purchase agreement: Energy pricing; may be levelized. Decision: Payment increases; Cash / loan purchase: Loan documents control; Lease: Read the payment schedule; Power purchase agreement: Read the rate and escalator. Decision: Service and protection; Cash / loan purchase: Product / installer warranties; Lease: Written lease coverage; Power purchase agreement: Written PPA coverage. Decision: Selling the home; Cash / loan purchase: Resolve any financing obligations; Lease: Transfer / other options in contract; Power purchase agreement: Transfer / other options in contract.

CLARITY BEFORE COMMITMENT

Compare year one and later years

Review the annual escalator and full payment schedule. A fixed lease offer and a levelized PPA are different agreements even if their starting monthly payments look similar. Production, service, transfer and buyout terms need separate comparison.

CLARITY BEFORE COMMITMENT

Design for the remaining utility bill

A solar payment does not eliminate grid charges. Model the household’s imports, exports and fixed charges, then add the agreement payment. Future rate increases are uncertain and should not be presented as guaranteed savings.

CLARITY BEFORE COMMITMENT

The 2026 tax-credit question

Do not assume a new 2026 homeowner installation qualifies for the former 30% federal residential credit. The IRS states that the credit is unavailable for property placed in service after 2025. A lease or PPA customer does not own the system and should not claim the system owner’s benefits.

VERIFY CURRENT PRODUCT INFORMATION

Review the manufacturer’s current documentation.

Product names, specifications, availability and warranty terms can change. Confirm the exact proposed model and controlling documents before making a decision.
